Mini Tattoo in Hoi An
A mini tattoo is small enough to cover with a thumb and finished inside an hour. It is the most common thing we do in Hoi An, because it fits the way people travel: you decide on a Tuesday, you are tattooed on a Wednesday, and it is closed over before the flight home. Small is not the same as easy — there is nowhere for a shaky line to hide at this size — but it is quick, and it is the cheapest honest tattoo on our chart.

How much does a mini tattoo cost in Hoi An?

Where you land inside that band is decided by how much line there is rather than by how wide the piece is. Three initials and a bee with forty separate legs and wings can occupy the same square inch and take twice as long apart. Anything that grows past the size of a matchbox is usually quoted at the fine line rate instead — we will tell you which side of the line yours falls on before you agree to anything. How long does a mini tattoo take?
Thirty to forty-five minutes in the chair, plus about ten minutes of consultation and stencil placement before that. Allow an hour in total and you will not be rushed. It is short enough to do between the Old Town and dinner, which is exactly why it is the style people walk in for.
Healing is quick too — the wound is shallow, so a mini piece is usually closed over in five to seven days rather than the two weeks a heavily shaded piece needs. The water rule does not shrink to match, though; see below.
How small can a tattoo actually be?
Smaller than most people think, and not as small as the picture they show us. Skin is not paper: ink spreads slightly under it over years, so two lines drawn a hair apart today close into one thicker line later. That is the real floor on size, and it is about spacing rather than about width.
- A simple shape — a wave, a mountain, a crescent, a single stem — goes very small and stays readable for decades.
- Lettering needs more room than it looks like it does. Below roughly the height of a grain of rice, letters with enclosed spaces fill in: an e becomes a dot and a date becomes a smudge.
- Anything with internal detail — a face, a building, a compass with numbers — has a size below which the detail is simply not there. We would rather draw it 20% larger than you pictured than hand you something that blurs.
- Fingers, palms and the side of a foot rub and shed constantly. Small work does not hold there, and we will say so rather than take the booking.
If the design you have brought will not survive at the size you want, you will hear it at the consultation, with a suggestion for what to change. That conversation is free and it is the whole point of having one.
What people get as a mini tattoo in Hoi An

Most minis are black. They do not have to be — colour works at this size too, and simply asks more of you afterwards in this climate.
When should I get a mini tattoo during my trip?
Towards the end, not at the start. Hoi An is hot, humid and one street from the sea, and a fresh tattoo means no swimming, no sunbathing and no sea water for about two weeks — a mini heals faster than most styles, but the rule does not shrink with the tattoo. Get it on day two of a two-week trip and you have traded twelve days of the beach for it.
