Does a blackwork tattoo fade?

A tattoo fades from its lightest tones inward. Blackwork has no lightest tones, so there is less to lose: a field of black that was packed evenly still reads as solid black a decade later. Of everything we tattoo, this is the style that asks least of you in a climate like this one — no pale pigment for the sun to take apart, no grey wash drifting towards your skin tone.

The craft is in the packing, and that is where a blackwork piece is actually won or lost. Black driven in one heavy pass traumatises the skin and heals patchy, so large fills are built in measured passes with time between them. A patchy fill is the one failure this style does have, and it shows up at six weeks rather than at six years. Negative space — the skin left bare — is part of the drawing rather than what is left over, and it gets planned first.

Can blackwork cover an old tattoo?

It is the most reliable cover-up there is, because a cover has to be darker than what is underneath and nothing is darker than solid black. Two ways of doing it: take the old piece out entirely under a field of black, or redraw it as ornament so the existing dark becomes part of the new pattern. The second keeps more skin and usually looks better; the first is certain.

How do I look after blackwork in this climate?

Solid black takes longer to settle than line work and it sheds a heavier scab, so a blackwork piece needs patience in Hoi An’s humidity. Keep it dry and covered for the first days, skip the river and the sea until it has fully closed, and leave a flaking edge alone — a flake pulled early takes packed ink with it and leaves a pale patch that has to be reworked.
